OSINT Pricing: How Much Does an OSINT Investigation Cost?

OSINT pricing is hard to find because most providers do not publish it. This guide shows how we quote, then collects the public price points that exist, from investigator day rates to tool subscriptions, so you can sanity-check any proposal.

  • Fixed quote after scoping
  • Urgent delivery +50%
  • Fee reduced if we miss the deadline
  • Dozens of public price points, checked 6 October 2026
Short answer

An OSINT investigation is usually priced per case, not per hour. OSINT-S gives a fixed quote once the scope is agreed, with a 50% surcharge for urgent work. For comparison, US private investigators charge about $75–$125 an hour for basic work, UK OSINT contractors earn a median of £575 a day, a due diligence report on one US subject starts around $550, and OSINT platforms range from £19 a month to six figures a year.

How Does OSINT-S Price an Investigation?

Per case, as a fixed quote after a short scoping conversation. The price does not change unless you change the scope.

The same model applies to all our OSINT services, from background checks to threat intelligence.

  • Fixed quote. Molfar Intelligence, which operates OSINT-S, evaluates each request individually and sets the price after analyzing scope and complexity (Molfar FAQ).
  • Timelines. Delivery ranges from 1 business day to 1 month depending on the service; due diligence takes from 10 business days for a focused check to up to 1 month for a comprehensive review (due diligence).
  • Urgency. An ASAP option is available for an extra 50%.
  • Missed deadlines. If we cannot complete the work on time, we tell you and reduce the cost.
  • Monitoring. Ongoing work is priced per month. Molfar's Minos platform lists its Brand Watch plan at $350 a month (launch price; $500 list) (Minos pricing); analyst-reviewed monitoring is quoted on scope.

For a sense of scale, Forbes Ukraine reported in 2023 that Molfar's average invoice was about $3,500 in 2022 and about $5,000 in 2023 (Business News summary, October 2023). Those are dated averages across all work, not current prices, but they show that most cases cost thousands of dollars, not tens of thousands.

What Drives the Cost of an OSINT Investigation?

Six things: the number of subjects, the number of countries, the depth of mapping, the languages, how thin the records are, and the deadline.

DriverCheaperMore expensive
SubjectsOne person or companyA network of people and entities
CountriesOne country with open registriesSeveral jurisdictions, offshore layers
DepthIdentity and red-flag checkFull ownership, asset and relationship mapping
LanguagesEnglish-language recordsLocal-language registries, courts and press
Record qualityDigitised public recordsThin, closed or contradictory records
DeadlineStandard timelineUrgent delivery (+50% at OSINT-S)

The format adds a little: a short memo costs less than a court-ready evidence pack with an analyst debrief.

OSINT Investigator Hourly and Day Rates

Pay and bill rates are very different. Investigators earn a US median of $24.62 an hour; clients pay $75–$400 an hour for private investigators in the US and around £575 a day for OSINT contractors in the UK.

Background Check and Due Diligence Prices

Standardised US background checks cost $30–$95 per report; a due diligence report on one subject costs from about $550, and comprehensive or international reports pass $1,500.

Database checks are cheap because they are automated and limited to set sources. An OSINT investigation costs more because an analyst follows the evidence across sources and countries and verifies it.

What Do Governments Pay for OSINT?

Published UK contracts range from a £46,450 single-tool subscription to an estimated £33 million OSINT services program.

  • The UK Department for Business and Trade awarded a contract worth £46,450 (ex VAT) for a Maltego Monitor subscription from September 2025 to July 2026 (Find a Tender).
  • The Home Office estimated £33 million (ex VAT) for OSINT, social media and geospatial services for Border Security from April 2026 to March 2028 (Find a Tender).
  • A UK police procurement framework for OSINT social-media screening software was estimated at £40 million over four years (Find a Tender).

These are negotiated enterprise deals. They show the order of magnitude, not a price a company would be offered.

Is It Cheaper to Build an In-House OSINT Team?

Only with steady volume. One UK OSINT analyst at the median salary plus a professional tool stack costs around £75,000 a year before employer costs, which buys a lot of investigations.

In the US, Glassdoor reports a median total pay of $92,160 for OSINT analysts (Glassdoor). An in-house analyst makes sense when you have constant, sensitive demand. If you need a few investigations a year, or cover for languages and countries your team lacks, a service is usually cheaper and faster.

How to Reduce the Cost of an OSINT Investigation

Ask a narrower question, share what you already know, phase the work, and avoid paying rush fees.

  1. Ask one sharp question. "Does this person control any company linked to sanctioned entities?" costs less than "find everything".
  2. Share your documents. Contracts, KYC files and earlier reports save research days.
  3. Phase the work. Start with a red-flag check, then go deeper only where something turns up.
  4. Plan ahead. Briefing two weeks before the deadline avoids the 50% urgency surcharge.
  5. Use monitoring for change, not repeat investigations. After the first report, a monitoring scope is cheaper than starting again.

Why Cheap OSINT Can Cost More

Instant lookups from leaked databases and anonymous bots are cheap because they skip verification and the law. A finding you cannot source, or should not hold, is a liability.

Leaked-data lookup services sold through messaging apps promise names, phone numbers and addresses in seconds. The data is often outdated or wrong, the seller may be committing offenses, and holding the results can breach data-protection law. In a dispute, unsourced findings are easy to attack and hard to use. Paying more for a verified, documented answer is usually the cheaper option once you count the risk.

OSINT Pricing FAQ

How much does an OSINT investigation cost?

Most providers quote per case. As public benchmarks, US private investigators charge $75–$125 an hour for basic work, UK OSINT contractors earn a median of £575 a day, and a due diligence report on one US subject starts around $550. OSINT-S gives a fixed quote after scoping.

What is the hourly rate for an OSINT investigator?

It varies widely: about $20 an hour for marketplace freelancers, $75–$125 for basic US private investigation, $125–$400 for specialized work, and around £575 a day for UK OSINT contractors.

Do OSINT companies publish their prices?

Few do. Tool vendors such as Maltego and OSINT Industries publish plans; investigation services usually quote per case because scope varies so much.

Is there an OSINT subscription?

Yes, for tools and monitoring: from £19 a month for lookup tools to tens of thousands a year for enterprise platforms. Investigations are usually bought per case.

How much does urgent OSINT work cost?

At OSINT-S, urgent delivery carries a 50% surcharge on the quoted fee.

Why is an OSINT investigation more expensive than a background check?

A background check runs a fixed set of automated database searches. An investigation follows the evidence across sources, countries and languages, and an analyst verifies and documents each finding.

How much does dark web monitoring cost?

Self-serve alerts start below $100 a month; enterprise platforms run from about $35,000 to $100,000 a year. Analyst-led monitoring is quoted on scope.

Is it cheaper to hire an in-house OSINT analyst?

Only with steady demand. A UK analyst at the median salary plus tools costs about £73,000 a year before employer costs.

Do you charge VAT?

Your quote states whether taxes apply. In the UK, consultancy supplied by a UK business is normally standard-rated; cross-border supplies to businesses usually fall under the reverse charge. Check with your tax adviser.
